Vendjavier Vairohta: Wizards Glory

Just behind a well tended garden sat an equally neat houe, the home of Tessarea Willowbark and Heldren’s apothecary. Tessarea was relatively new to Heldren, having arrived in the village only 25 years ago after some trouble up North in the river kingdoms. She was quiet and somber, and most of the villagers believed she must have suffered some great tragedy of her past, such as the loss of her one true love. Being an elf, in a mostly human town, few got to know her enough to discover the truth behind her disposition. Her nephew, Vendjavier, had arrived a few months ago to help Tessarea with her apothecary business. A favor, Vendjavier was not too eager to return. It had been Tessa, as the locals called her, who had paid the high fees for Vendjavier to attend school at the prestigious wizarding school in Absalom. In truth, the big city life of Absalom’s University had left Vendjavier a bit big for his britches. Now, auntie Tessa had him working in some backwoods town creating alchemist fire (in case of a violent troll attack) and potions of resist energy for no apparent reason; something Vendjavier had no interest in at all. Although he did have use for magic, his interest was of an entirely different nature.

“Vendjavier!”, Tessa called in a soft, but firm, voice from a room in the back of the apothecary. “I’m going next door to see Argus. He’s got a fresh order of leeches for me I need to pick up.” Argus was the town dentist and barber; an artist with razors and scissors, as well as offering services as a healer. The thing that Vendjavier found odd was his aunt’s fondness for her neighbor. After all, she was an elf, from a proud family; and he … well he was a dwarf.

“I don’t understand what she sees in that dwarf.” Vendjavier mumbled to himself. Maybe it was just a need for companionship or a break from the doldrums of town life, he thought. Vendjavier could understand the loneliness as he always had trouble making friends. He has a knack for offending people and putting them off. “Life is not always about being the best” his mentor, Hemlon, would say “and you certainly don’t have to make feel people feel inferior when do succeed.” His words did ring true when apprenticeships were handed out. He was top of his class, but his inability to work well with others left him with one option. Go back to Aunt Tessa after graduation. He was starting to see the wisdom in Hemlon’s words, well maybe, what does that old man know anyway. The other part of Aunt Tessa’s life, the boring town life, is what Vendjavier found unbearable. She told him exciting stories of the evil white witches in the north including details of their tyrannical rule and their weaknesses. She even taught him the Skald language spoken in the north. When he would push for details as to why she left the exciting life of fighting the witches, however, she would end the conversation and not speak of the north for weeks. “Whatever happened must have been horrible. Someday soon I’m going to leave this boring town and head north to give the witches some payback for Aunt Tessa.” And maybe show Hemlon and his classmates that personality was over-rated and skill was what truly mattered.

Alexius Demitri came barging in the door to the apothecary. He was soaking wet from head to foot and had a very perturbed expression on his face. Upon seeing Vendjavier, he looked around for Tessa but when he sensed she was not available he addressed the young wizard. “Excuse me sir!? I need you to make me a love potion, of great strength! Immediately! …. Please”. He added the last part after re-composing a sliver of his kindness.

“Hold on! Hold on! Aunt Tessa’s got one around here somewhere. Here it is.” Vendjavier holds up the metal vial containing the elixir of love. “This is an expensive elixir to make. It’ll cost you 150 gold…or you could just go the cheap route and take these spicemint drops I have for a silver. They should help a lot. Your breath would make a goblin wrinkle it’s nose.”

>> There are no auto successes on skill checks. But still. Good roll

Alexius tenses as the elf moves in his way. Shaken by the elf’s advances, he seems to tremble slightly. He glares menacingly as he removes a bag full of platinum. He puts down the coin on the counter and then removes his glove, deliberately taking time to pull the leather from each finger. He then slaps the glove down on the table. He turns to the door. " Tomorrow … High noon. You will learn your lesson boy. I’ll see you at the town square! Where something nice for your funeral. " The nobles voice is unsteady, but his message is clear.

Alexius ignores any further remark, leaving in a huff. Insulted, as a gentleman, he has chosen a noble course of action. A proper duel.

“I am sure Aunt Tessa will be angry, but if I need to teach this spoiled noble a lesson, so be it.” Vendjavier thought to himself. " I’ll make sure to take some healing salve or a healing potion from Aunt Tessa so that the damage I do to him isn’t permanent, but he will learn that as a Vairohta, translated ‘warweaver’ in common, I will live up to my name." It had been awhile since Vendjavier had been in a duel, so he would make sure to prepare tonight. Although he knew how to prepare and maintain his blade, his Aunt had spoken highly of the local smith so he thought he might have her take a look, just to be sure it was in fighting shape and decide if his Aunt’s praise was well placed. He would also be sure to check his component pouch to be sure it was stocked and carefully choose the spells he would use to show Mr. Demetrius the folly in choosing to duel a wizard. “Great wizards, and smart elves, are always prepared.” he thought to himself.

Pouring over his spellbook, and dusting off a few spells he hasn’t used in a while, Vendjavier selected some spells he would need and marked his spellbook accordingly, preparing the materials carefully before going to sleep. Being an elf, he needed little.

Sleep came at last, and the overconfident wizard awoke with a heaping of energy. He gathered his spellbook and component pouch, carefully stocked for the duel. The blacksmith’s shoppe was just across the street from the apothecary, so with sword in tow, spellpouch strapped to his side and a spellbook under his arm, Dawn approached so Vendjavier quietly snuck out into the main room and towards the front door, not to wake aunt Tessa. Tessa shakes her head slowly, the disappointment heavy in her eyes. “Some cannot be taught” she said out loud and to herself. She moved through the room past Vendjavier, opened the back door, and let it close behind her without looking back. Vendjavier was left with himself and the sounds from the apothecary. Iskar looked up from the forge. He eyed Vendjavier suspiciously and then held out his hand for the blade. He turned it over in his hand, feeling the weight and inspected the blade. “You are Tessa’s by aren’t you?” Iskar remarked to the young elf. “I’ve seen you across the street. Why the concern about your blade? Didn’t I hear you we’re some kind of alchemist or wizard or something. Studied over at the big university in Absolam. I am a wizard, but I am also an elf. Elves are trained to use a sword and a bow even if they will be pursuing magical training. It is part of our heritage. I have also been taught maintenance and how to choose a decent blade, however my training is only basic and I have never had to make sure it was ready for more than practice drills and traing duels. I have heard the smith here is very skilled and hoped she could check to be sure the blade is battle ready. It was given to me as part of my training in Absalom and I’m told it is made by a master. It’s enchantment flows through me and is a result of my training, but would fade if wielded by another.

No charge really, I need to sharpen a set of cold iron blades I finished this week so I can do it conveniently. And if you see your aunt”, he added, “tell her to pick up some more frost enchantment oil if she visits the winter market again this year. I was able to turn quite a profit selling a frost enchanted cold iron long sword at the bazaar in Absolam last time she brought me some. Ten-frim even carved the runes in the blade needed for the enchantment. Anyhow”, he continued, "just leave the blade over there and I can get to it in an hour or so. ". Iskar pointed to a rack that held several other blades. Some were made from the mysterious dark cold iron he had spoken of.

Vendjavier comes back at the appointed time feeling a little anxious about the duel. The excitement of the duel has him feeling a little queasy and the guilt from Aunt Tessa is not helping much, but someone should teach the man a lesson. I did sharpen it to peak performance though and even without the oil it should prove to be a magnificent blade.”

As Venjavier approached the town square, he noticed immediately that the blacksmith had been right. I guess there aren’t any secrets in a small town, he thought. It seemed like the whole town had shown up to witness the big event. I mean, what else were they going to do for entertainment.

The sign outside the silver stout read Daily Special: Wizards Folly, a savory lamb stew with chunks of carrots and bits of magic. Guaranteed to levitate your spirits. Followed by, Nobleman’s Pie; a delicate confection of tart gooseberry and sugared plums. 2 Silver

Some young orphan boys ran up to meet Venjavier as he approached the square. One stuck out a stick at the other and shouted “Pew! Pew! You’re dead mister. Pew pew!” He waved the stick around as if casting magic missile past Vendjavier from a willow branch.

The other boy laughed and pranced around like a noble waving his hand in the air. “Your magical folly has no effect on my noble blood” He took a larger stick and waved it around like a sword, prancing about the cobblestone street.

A teenage girl whispered to her friend as Venjavier passed buy, they both giggled at each other and seemed to blush a little.

From the other end of the square, Alexius Demitris approached the gathering, a servant of some sort carrying a heavy bag beside him.

He also prepared Reduce Person and Daze just in case they might be allowed, but most duels would not allow their use.) He had cast Mage Armor and Truestrike on the way over. He had also brought the healing salve from Aunt Tessa in case he accidently hurt Demitris too much. “Are you ready, Demitris?”

Demetris stands before the young mage. He begins rummaging through his bag of items. " I suppose you think that I might not allow magic in the duel, but I want to show you how foolish it is to insult a noble with great wealth and power. You will learn not to be so foolish. This will be a test of your meager wizards powers against the ultimate power of the coin. Do your worst, but remember, this is NOT a duel to the death, so I will spare you your miserable life."

Ten-Frim approaches both of the participants. He levitates above the ground a few feet and holds up a contract. The contract outlines the rules of the duel and has a place for both to sign.

This duel is to settle a dispute between Alexius Demitris and Vendjavier Vairhota. Magic will be permitted as well as magic items of power. The duel will be to the pain only. The loser will be publically shamed by showing that they are weak and a worthless loser. The loser will be required to always pay homage to the winner in public by kneeling in their presence and referring to them as ‘Great One’.

Vendjavier feels like he should treat Cornelius has an “uncle” or “respected elder”, he might be in trouble, but he doesn’t feel scared. Almost, like he can’t put his finger on it…could he be feeling guilty or like he let this man down? He doesn’t even know the man. His Aunt might know him…“Aunt Tessa is going to be furious.” And there that feeling is again…guilt or remorse or that he let his Aunt down somehow. These feelings are not something he has contended with in the past. He has hoped to one day travel north to fight the winter witches his Aunt had told him so much about and make her proud and avenge the secret evil they had done to her. Alexius was no winter witch, though and pride was not what he was feeling now. Alexius did deserve to be taken down a peg, but there was probably a better way. “I’ll apologize to Aunt Tessa when this is through.” he said as Alexius, now his normal size, enters the room. “Who are you talking to, elf?” Alexius asks as he enters the room. “My name is Vendjavier, and I was talking to myself.” He looks at Alexius and sees that he is still injured and then he feels the pain in his own thigh. “Here,” Vendjavier says “This will help your wounds.” and he hands Alexius the healing salve from the apothocary. Vendjavier doesn’t try to lie. He doesn’t feel it would be worth the effort and somehow, it wouldn’t feel right to lie to this man. “Simply put sir, Alexius came in the shop to purchase a love potion. He was a bit rude and agitated and when I explained that the potion was expensive, I was rude back…insulting his oral hygiene, if I remember correctly. Anyway, he took the potion from my hand and attempted to leave without paying. When I moved to stop him from leaving, he took exception saying something about ‘Did I know who he was dealing with’ or some such. He was angered and challenged me to a duel. I accepted, much to my Aunt’s dismay because she is now furious with me. You know the rest. I will say this though, sir. I never meant your son any permanent harm. I made sure to bring healing salve from Aunt Tessa to be safe. I just wanted to teach him a lesson. I feel though, that if your son hasn’t learned anything from this,” Venjavier states as he rubs his wounded thigh, “I certainly have.” With that, Vendjavier just shrugs his shoulders and waits for the man to reply, though thinking about Aunt Tessa brings the feelings of guilt back. He wonders what he can do to apologize to her.

Vendjavier reacts to the comment as remebered feelings of hurt and disbelief return, “I think my intellect and skill scared my prospective employers.” He sees a look of understanding on Cornelius’ face and he realizes what he just said and he blushes as guilt sets in again. This feeling is going to take some getting used to. Vendjavier takes a deep breath and says, "More than likely though, it was my own personal attitude that gave them pause. " As he says the words, his guilt subsides. “I hope to be able to remedy the situation, but we shall see.”

“Very good. So, what are you passionate about. What most interested you in University?”, Cornelius relaxed a bit and took out a couple glasses from a desk drawer and brought out a decantor filled with a deep red liquid. He poured a glass for himself and then for the elf. “Varisian Brandy?” Cornelius asked as he offered the second glass to Venjavier.

“Yes. Thank you.” Vendjavier says as he thinks about a reply. “At the university I learned two things about myself. First, I love the feel of magic as in flows through and from me. It can be challenging to control, but if you guide it as opposed to forcing it, it can be very satisfying.” Vendjavier takes the glass and gives it a taste acknowledging the fine flavor to his host, before continuing. “Secondly was that I have a love of languages. I think both things stem from my Aunt. She has told me stories of the north since I was much younger. Tales of the tyrannical white witches, the culture and the languages. She is the one that taught me the Skald language and showed me my first cantrip.” Vendjavier pauses as thinks of Aunt Tessa again. “I just wish I could find a way to thank her for all she has done for me and make her proud. I tried at the university by pushing myself hard in my studies. I did well with the magic and with the languages. I finished top of my class in magical studies, I did well in classes on geography and history and I can now speak in the simple languages of Goblin and Orc and the more complex languages of dwarves, dragons and fey as well as my own home language, Elven. But now I think she would be happier if I had just made some friends.” He shrugs and takes another sip of his drink. “I hope one day to make her proud.” He laughs and then adds, “It probably sounds a little crazy, but I would like to get some ‘payback’ for her some day. She has a sadness and some underlying anger when she talks of the white witches. She has yet to give me any details, but I know she was wronged by them, or maybe just one, at some point. Maybe someday she’ll share the whole story.” Vendjavier shrugs to dismiss the thought, but the thought still lingers.

“Well, thats interesting. It just so happens I may have an opportunity for you that would put both of your talents to good use. I have recently aquired a collection of texts from a trader in Magnamar. Many of these texts I have glossed over, but many contain mysteries to me and are written in languages I fail to understand completely or at all. Perhaps I could hire you to catalogue these texts for me. There are a few specific things I am hoping to discover, but we can discuss that later, if you accept my offer. You could even do it in your spare time. I will provide you with a good wage, and of course the thrill of discovery. " He looks at Venjavier. “Interested?”

“Yes, sir. I am very interested. I still have to help my Aunt Tessa in the apothecary, but I will work on my own time to get the work done. When would you like me to start?” Vendjavier is excited about the opportunity to examine the books. He also noticed how Cornelius stated “both” of his interests. Maybe some of the texts are magical which might allow to expand his personal spell book.

“Great .. you can start anytime.” Cornelius reaches into his desk and pulls out a parchment, a key and a small coin purse. “Here is an advance, and here is the key to the Library. You can access it day or night from the grounds. This is a parchment that will get you access to the grounds at the estate.” He slides the parchment and key across the table. A purse of coin placed with them. " I will leave you further instructions at the library." He nods to Venjavier. " I know you will do well at this task. There is really nobody else in town that could do this for me. I was going to have a scholar sent from Oppara, but this will really save me the trouble so it is good fortune for us both. " He stands, extending his hand to the young elf.

Vendjavier shakes Cornelius’ hand and says, “Thank you very much. I will start tomorrow evening.” He heads home and for a little while at least forgets, about his leg, though it is aching quite a bit when he gets back to the apothecary. He is feeling quite happy, albeit sore, when he enters the shop and sees Aunt Tessa there. It doesn’t look like her temper has eased since he’s been gone. “Aunt Tessa, please let me explain,” Vendjavier starts, “I know you are angry because of the duel. I see now that it was foolish and I apologize for not telling you about it. If I had to do it all over again, I would heed your words. Neither Demetrius nor I were hurt severely and I did take precautions to not harm him permanently. His father interrupted the duel” Aunt Tessa is about to explode when Vendjavier cuts her off quickly “Please allow me to continue. I have since made peace with Demetrius and his father has gone so far as to offer me a job. Nothing that will interfere with my work for you, but it will give me a chance to use some of my translating skills, my knowledge and my arcane training from Absalom. He has even given me an advance. Again, I apologize for my actions and hope you can forgive me.” Vendjavier bows his head and waits for her scolding.

Tessa shakes her head but then says "what’s done is done. Some work to use your talents may be just the thing you need to give you purpose. I must warn you, though that Cornelius Demitris is the family patriarch and will expect nothing less than perfection. You have already accepted his offer so you are oathbound to it. Should you fail him , or give him attitude, your punishment could be severe. I hope, for your sake, you have decided to take a path of temperance and prudence. ". She placed a hand on his shoulder "I have much work for you. I am heading to gather forest herbs. I expect you work hard until I return. We will be having dinner with argue tonight. "

Vendjavier begins the list of tasks his aunt has left him. He shrugs his shoulders as he prepares the table for the meal Aunt Tessa will prepare still wondering what his aunt sees in the dwarf. Argus is nice, fairly intellegent and its fun to practice his Dwarven around him, but he is still a dwarf and Aunt Tessa is an elf. “I suppose it makes no difference to me. Its not my choice to make.” Vendjavier finishes up his list of tasks as his aunt returns and he helps her with dinner. Vendjavier begins to wonder what he will find in the scrolls and books Cornelius has hired him to translate. He will find out after dinner. Argus arrives on time and dinner is nice, but Vendjavier feels a little like a third wheel. He clears the table when the meal is finished, tops off the drinks for Aunt Tessa and Argus and bids them “Goodnight.” as he heads for the door and Cornelius’ library.

Arriving anxiously at the estate, Venjavier shows his papers to the gate attendant. After checking them over, he lets him in. The manor is large with luxurious landscaping. Following a trail along the side of the property, Venjavier arrives at a stone building. A dark wooden door stands before him. Carvings of strange creatures cover the surface of it. A keyhole is not obvious. (Perception and Knowledge planes are appropriate or any other spells you might want to cast)

This door might actually lead to a pocket of an alternate dimension. Similarly carved doors were used to create pocket universes that could only be accessed by their owners or those of great power. Thinking to himself It seems unlikely, but it does bear similar markings. Venjavier ponders these things as he casts a spell, looking for magic within the door. An aura is present, his studies tell him it is one of conjuration. Is this the right place? Surely it is. Venjavier wonders to himself. Where did he put the keyhole. Venjavier takes out the key, turning it over in his hand.

“That’s an interesting technique young wizard.” A voice from Venjavier bellows out, startling him completely. Zhav spun around to see an aged man in a robe standing behind him. He leaned upon a gnarled staff. “Don’t feel to bad. I had trouble figuring that one out. Took me three weeks. That was actually my first task for the Demitris family. Getting into that door. You must be my new apprentice. I am Avelton Nartrellis Gondarnamar the Fourteenth”

Vendjavier senses power in this man, “Pleased to meet you, sir. I am Vendjavier Vairohta.” He doesn’t normally care to impress anyone but himself, but for some reason he would like to win the respect of this man. “If you would permit me another try.” Avelton nods as Vendjavier takes a small bowl from his pouch and pours some wine into it. Stirring the wine with a feather retrieved from another pouch he whispers some arcane words and moves his hands in a strange flourish. (Casts identify) His eyes flash a strange color blue for a moment before returning to normal. The other wizard smiles. Then Vendjavier begins chanting again and with another flourish his eyes flash blue again, before dimming to a dull blue glow. (Casts Detect Magic) He then removes the key from his pouch and studies it. (Spellcraft check to identify properties of the key: roll 14 + 10 identify +10 Spellcraft =34) (If the key yields no results then Vendjavier will go through the process again, unless one casting works for both, on the door.)

After giving the key a sufficient study, he determines that there is a magical aura being produced around his body as he holds the key. He didn’t think to check himself until he noticed the glow of the key and the glow of his hand and arm as he held it out. I’m going to look foolish if I try this and it doesn’t work. Venjavier thinks to himself. Insight has told him that he must possess the key and that is the key itself and then just walk through the door. He can’t just touch the door but must commit completely to the task. If this doesn’t work, it’s going to hurt. He also believes that their may be some word or phrase to speak along with the entry. Not knowing what that phrase is, he says the only thing he can think of. (I’ll let you say what you think and attempt to pass through the door)

A number of pass phrases go through Vendjavier’s head. Open sesame. Open says me. Joe sent me. None of them seemed reasonable. So Vendjavier decides to keep it straight forward and simple. Holding the key in front of him he says “By the authority of the Demetrius family” Realizing that he himself is now part of the key he walks with purpose towards (into) the door.

The old wizard cringes as Vendjavier slams into the door with great force. His pride taking the brunt of the damage, venjavier turns, partially stunned as the old man speaks. He doesn’t even laugh as Vendjavier expected at the outcome. “So close my apprentice. You took me back just then to the first time I did that. Three straight days of headaches”. At this, the old man finally began to chuckle, mostly at himself. "I’ll save you further bruising. To enter you must announce yourself and ask permission. While the key gives permission in a sense, it becomes attuned to an individual and only that individual can enter. Think of it as a very sophisticated security system. Also. You will find that your key may open some doors but not others. "

“Thank you, sir.” Vendjavier says as he rubs his head and checks his nose for blood. He turns again and walks toward the door holding the key. “I am Vendjavier Vairohta. May I enter?” He waits for some response. As the door shimmers Vendjavier walks forward hoping this attempt will be less painful. And less embarrassing.
