Oriann Swiftt was a regular at the Silver Stout, the local tavern in the small hamlet of Heldren. Tucked away from any important trade route, the town rarely experienced visitors. The entire town basically functioned well enough on its own and, like many other residents, Oriann liked to spend his evenings merrymaking with the townsfolk at he Silver Stout, which was basically the only thing to do during the lazy weeks and festive weekends that passed by. The establishment was run by Menander and Kale Garimos, a husband and wife team. The house specialty was Venison flank steak and numble pie prepared by Menander in the kitchen while Kale could often be found stirring up a batch of three devil ale made from imported Chelish hops.

Oriann sat at his usual table surrounded by friends, enjoying a pint while playing three dragon ante. Nothing pleased Oriann more than taking hard earned money from the local townsfolk. He always pretended to hate to win, wishing his friends better luck in the future. Nobody really complained. The stakes were never too high and the closest he had gotten to a brawl was the time Iskar had lost his cold iron dagger to him. He only liked it for the way it glistened in the moonlight, but Iskar had been pretty perturbed to hand it over. Oriann had won it fairly, as far as anyone knew, but he really thought the only way Iskar was going to give it to him was jabbed right into his chest.

As the night wore on, the Stout emptied of patrons and Kale hollered over at Oriann. “You going to sleep by the fire tonight Oriann, or you not realize you are the only one left?” She had her broom out and was sweeping up under one of the tables. " we’ll you and that hooded gentleman in the corner. I didn’t catch his name, but maybe you can help him get to the door ok." Kale made a glance over to the corner where a man sat with a hood over his eyes, arms crossed. Maybe he was sleeping, thought Oriann as he rose from his chair.

Oriann gave his mug a quick gulp and emptied its contents. With a swift wipe of his sleeve, he dried any remnants around his lips, and quickly stood. After carefully tucking the bench back under the table, he returns the mug to Kale and shoots her a quick grin. “Thank you Kale, I will see you and your husband later this week. Have a peaceful night.” Oriann turns to make his way to the cloaked man in the corner. He carefully placed his hand on his shoulder, and gave it a gentle shake. “Sir, I mean you no harm, but let me escort you outside. They’re closing up for the night.”

Oriann shook the man but he was unresponsive. He shook again raising his voice more but the man made no response. He began to slouch over, falling to the floor with a crash. A small figurine rolls from his hand as he thumps on the hard floor of the Stout. The figurine takes a bounce and then rolls until it rests against the wall.

Oriann approaches the resting place of the figurine. He quickly plucks it from the ground and puts it in his pocket for the time being. He turns his gaze back to the unresponsive cloaked man, grabs his arm, throws it over his shoulder, and exits the Stout. Oriann carefully hauls the man to the side of the Stout, rests him gently on the ground, and places his back against the wall. Oriann turns to leave and head home, and remembers the figurine in his pocket. He pulls it out and inspects it more closely, running his fingers on the ridges.

Leaving the dead man on the side of the building for daylight to find, Oriann inspects the figurine carefully. The figurine is actually a doll. It is masterfully constructed, with blue sapphires for eyes and what appears to be real hair. It possesses a lifelike quality that is quite disturbing. The face of the doll appears as that of a child, but one that has been aged a hundred years. The doll’s wrinkles and age marks are perfect in their craftsmanship and horror. The golden hair of the doll is tied back with a blue scarf. As Oriann studies the doll, a shiver overcomes him. Probably a cold front, he tells himself, unassured.

Realizing the man is dead, Oriann, being a little startled at first, places the doll in his pocket, and bends down to the man. He searches for any obvious wounds but doesn’t easily find any sign of lacerations. ((OOC: will edit with a perception check if you would like, but im assuming theres no obvious signs). What could have killed this man, he ponders. Cheating at gambling?…Poison?…This….doll?! Looking left and right to look for nosey onlookers, Oriann throws the mans arm over his shoulder again and makes his way to Ionna’s home, taking back alleys when available to keep from drawing attention, He probably won’t like me bringing a dead stranger to his door at this hour, but I can’t risk an innocent child finding this man, Oriann thought to himself. After what felt like a day long trek carrying “dead” weight, the tiefling arrives at the door or Ionna. He gives the door a quick 3 taps, with no answer. He knocks a little bit harder and thinks he may hear a little it of rustling, so he waits to see if the man will come to the door.

“Rubbing her eyes, Ionna opens the door. Oriann?? What brings you here at this hour? Come inside”, she begins but then notices the body. “What happened here? Did you kill someone?” Ionna begins to raise her voice a bit. “Tell me now!”

Oriann quickly, steps inside, sits the man against the wall, and turns to Ionna. While gasping for breath, Oriann spits out, “Its almost daybreak and I didn’t want to scare any citizens with this body, Perhaps I can take it to one of the local healers and see what they think could have been the cause. And of course I didn’t kill him! I was asked to help him home from the Silver Stout, and after carrying him out I realized he was dead! This doll was in his pocket, but that’s all I’ve found as of now.” Oriann pulls the doll from his pocket and hands it to the mayor. “Does this trinket mean anything to you?”

“I will do what I can to find out what or who did this.”

The mayor shakes her head .. “Its creepy. You better look into it. Take the man to Argus and have him take a look over the body. Better use the coach. Put him in the back so you don’t draw suspicion … Best not to alert the town quite yet. Leave him and take him in the morning. Thanks for coming to me first. I will construct a letter to send to Argus explaining what we need him to do and have it ready for you in the morning” The mayor tightens her robe and turns to leave, looking back she comments " And Oriann, you might want to ask Tessa about that doll. I think I saw something similar to that in her shop once when I was buying a tonic." She closes the door quietly whispering .. “Good Night”

((Im assuming she gave the doll back))

Now being wide awake with thoughts of murder, and questioning what could have happened to this man, Oriann decides it would be wisest to wait till the morning to visit Tessa. Having already woken up one friend during the night, a shopkeeper may not respond so kindly. Heading home, Oriann runs possibilities through his head, on how to approach this. “Best to start with the legwork and go from there,” he thinks to himself. Arriving at home, he opens the door, approaches a bowl of water on the table, and delves his hands right in. Giving them a quick scrub, he cups his hands next, throwing a splash onto his face. He then approaches the bed, and prays he can get a good night sleep. He flops down, closes his eyes, takes a few deep breaths to calm his nerves.

What seems like 30 seconds later, the young Tiefling opens his eyes to the sound of bustling in the town. “I must have been more tired than I thought,” he thinks to himself. Without hesitation, he jumps from his bed, repeats his handwashing/facewashing ritual, and exits his home. After a bit of time to calm down, he seems like he is able to process all of this information much more easily, Being lost in thought, he almost passes Tessa’s shop, so he abruptly turns and opens the door to go inside.

((and I would assume my parents would be alive, though I wouldn’t live with them, but I guess that would be up to me. I see them as a bit overprotective, especially since they adopted a Tiefling in this area))

The bell rings on the apothecary door. Tessa stands at a table over on one side of the room, gathering some ingredients from a high shelf. She looks over when Oriann enters and smiles. She carries several glass vials in her hands as she steps off a small stool to greet him. “How can I help you Investigator?”

Oriann carefully closes the door behind him, and about-faces to Tessa. He walks towards her, starting to explain, “There is something that has come up as-of-late, and I believe you may be able to help me, though I believe we should speak a little more in private.” He gestures over to the corner of the room, away from prying ears (or if there is no one in there at the moment, away from ears if they happen to walk in). Turning his gaze back to Tessa, he removes the doll from his pocket, and extends his hand to her. “Have you seen a trinket like this before? There was a man found dead last night, and this is all I could find on him. Ionna believes she may have seen something similar in here at some point. I need all the help I can get.”

Tessa’s eyes widen, staring at the doll. She drops the vials she had in her arms and they rattle about on the desk, one shattering, releasing a floral fragrance into the apothecary. Her face turns white. "Where did you ? You say it was on a dead man? How did he die? You really shouldn’t … " She searches around for a cloth and places it on the desk motioning for Oriann to place the doll on it.

Startled by Tessa’s reaction, Oriann drops the doll, as if playing hot-potato. It reminded him of his childhood, being teased, and being the monkey-in-the-middle, though his thoughts turned right back to the doll and what it could mean. “It was in the man’s pocket. He was slouched over in The Silver Stout, and Kale asked me to help him home. I tried waking him to no avail. Eternal slumber has taken over him.” Oriann pauses for a moment, feeling sad for the man who’s life was forfeit for such unknown reasons. “I’m not sure what could have done it, or what importance this doll could have. Tell me all you know.”

“I haven’t seen a doll like this in a long time. It may not be as it seems, but the guardian dolls of the white witches of Irrisen contain a fragment or entire soul trapped within. The Jadwiga trapped soul shards into such guardians, like this doll. Often, once one has made a connection with such a doll, the two form an unseen bond, the soul shard, communicating its thoughts through visions and dreams.” She looks up at Oriann. “Have you felt any such visions? Experienced disturbing images?”

“No i haven’t had any such visions or images yet. Do you think this could have taken the life of that poor man?” Oriann’s brow furrows deeply, “Ill have to take this information straight back to Ionna. I sure know hope he would know what to do with this information.”

Tessa nods. " Be careful. You should leave the doll here with me. I will try to divine whether it is a real Jadwiga guardian doll or not. If it is .. it could very well have been the cause of this man’s death. And it could mean trouble for you, if you inadvertently bonded with it. Let’s hope it is nothing."

Oriann leaves the doll in Tessa’s possession, and shakes her hand. “Thank you so much for your help Tessa. And I’ll let you know if anything strange starts happening to me. Let’s hope not.” Oriann lets out a little awkward chuckle, and gulps down the knot in his throat. He then heads from Tessa’s shop and back to Ionna’s home, to relay this information back to her, and to bring the body to Argus. After a little walk, he arrives at the Mayor’s home, and gives the door three quick raps, while awaiting reply.

The answer doesn’t come immediately. Oriann rummages around in his pocket. He feels a weight in his right inner coat pocket that wasn’t there before. As he hears footsteps coming to the front door, he removes the article from his pocket to find the doll, once more in his possession. It seems to be smiling at him.
